Intermittent Fasting Tips To Safely Lose Weight

Intermittent fasting has been a popular weight loss method as of late. The concept of fasting itself, however, is not new; the practice of temporarily going on without eating or drinking actually stemmed from many major world cultures and religions. Unlike fasting, though, intermittent fasting is done mainly as a way of getting its health benefits, as opposed to being a part of a religious and cultural tradition.
One benefit of intermittent fasting is that it helps promote autophagy, a process where your cells essentially "take out the trash" by removing malfunctioning cell components. Increased autophagy can lead to a revitalized immune function, increasing your cells' anti-stress protection. Fasting was suggested by some research to lower blood pressure and also increase sensitivity to insulin, lessening hunger between meals.
However, the real reason why people practice intermittent practice is to lose weight. Losing weight is a largely individual journey, even though the results of it and calorie restriction have been shown in one study to be the same.
Like any dietary, fitness and lifestyle method, intermittent fasting has its risks, and is therefore not for everyone. Still, if you are serious about losing weight through intermittent fasting, here are some tips that will help you safely burn off unwanted pounds:
Pick A Suitable Fasting Method
There are many methods of intermittent fasting that works for people with varying dietary and health conditions. A typical intermittent fast has a 12-, 8- or 4-hour daily feeding window, but, depending on the condition/s you have, there are other alternative methods for
getting the fat-burning, weight-reducing fast you need:
  • One Meal Per Day Fasting - It involves eating only once daily.
  • Alternate Day Fasting - Alternate day fasting is a less-regimented fasting method that lets you switch between days of zero-calorie drinks and full eating; basically, you eat only every other day.
  • Extended Fasting - It is fasting for 24 or more hours.
  • 5:2 Diet - A 5:2 diet involves eating normally without restrictions for five days and only 500 to 600 calories for two fasting days.
  • During a fast, it is best to consume either plain sugar-free coffee, tea or water.
    Consult With A Doctor
If you want to practice intermittent fasting without experiencing its downsides, it is always best to consult with a doctor before starting a fasting diet because they know how to help you approach it as safely as possible.
That is because fasting is not recommended for people with chronic health issues, particularly for those with gout or diabetes. In addition, medical professionals have advised against fasting for people who either are underweight or have experienced an eating disorder in the past.
Otherwise, trying a fast is fine if you are in a good health condition and are either seeking an alternate way of shedding weight or simply interested in the benefits of autophagy.
Stop Fasting If Not Feeling Well
If you notice yourself feeling dizzy, light-headed or are having difficulty concentrating, then it is best to stop your fast and get some nutrients and calories that your body need, especially if you have been doing it for more than a few hours. Start slow with either a light soup or something easily digestible like crackers before proceeding with a full meal.
Generally, if you feel bad during a fast to the point where it affects your life, then it is best to consider stopping.

The 6 tips to burn more fat and lose weight fast when you run

IF you're trying to lose weight then lacing up your trainers and heading out for a run is one of the best ways to do it.
Running burns loads of calories, may actually help suppress your appetite and targets harmful belly fat.

However, there are a few tweaks you can make to your runs to really unleash its full fat burning potential.
In particular, mixing up your speed, cutting down your pre-training snacks and even resting more can all help you shed a few more pounds.
Here, we take you through some simple ways you can become a fat burning machine when you're out pounding the pavements...
    1. HIIT
Short explosive bursts of running at around 80 per cent of your maximum heart rate is guaranteed to make you instantly enter the 'fat burning zone'.
This is because, intense training activates fat burning genes while you work out, and increases your metabolism afterwards.
You can try this in a simple 30 minute HIIT session by alternating between one minute sprints and four minutes of jogging in between.
    2. Add rest periods
You may think take a rest in the middle of your training run may seem counterproductive - but it turns out this could be the key to shedding a few extra pounds.
Scientists from Japan asked two groups of participants to complete a one hour cardio workout, with one group exercising for the full 60 minutes while the others rested for 20 minutes halfway through.
Despite exercising for less time, the second group actually burned more fat than the first.
The experts behind the study claimed that the break in between the exercise sessions meant that fat metabolism was accelerated higher than it was through continuous exercise.
    3. Love the long run
Not every run needs to be all about channelling your inner Usain Bolt and going as fast as you can.
While long, steady runs are key if you're marathon training - they may also be the secret to blitzing excess body fat.
In particular, running for over 30 minutes will significantly boost the rate at which you continue to burn fat when you have finished training.
Jo Pavey's top tips for getting into running
Olympic runner Jo Pavey, who is an ambassador for Simplyhealth, has shared her top tips for beginners wanting to get into running.
  • Get family involved - it can be a lot easier to get out of the door for a run if you get your family or kids involved.
  • Build up gradually - you don't need to keep running, you can maybe try and jog for a couple of minutes, walk for a couple of minutes, jog for a couple of minutes and gradually build up your confidence.
  • Set a long term goal - if you set yourself a really long term goal that can help - whether that's to do your first ever 5K or 10K.
  • Give yourself a cheat day - it's all about balance and just generally I've found having that balance in life does a lot of good.
  • Mix up the pace - there are things like tempo runs where you run slightly harder for say ten or 20 minutes, so you're really practising that sustained effort. And then of course interval sessions, where you're breaking your running up into chunks.
  • Run in new locations - switch it up and try and go and run in beautiful or new locations.
  • Make it fun - most of all you just need to make your running enjoyable, it's a wonderful sport. Try and make it fun for yourself - try and run with a running buddy to keep you motivated.
  • One study, published in the Canadian Journal of Sport Sciences, found that runners who trainer for an hour saw a 500 per cent increase in post-run calorie burn when compared to their half hour sessions.
    4. Cut back on pre-training snacks
Many people think that because they're running they can get carried away with carbo-loading and gorging on as many energy bars as they want.
While excess carbohydrate consumption can help boost energy levels before a marathon, it simply isn’t necessary before shorter training runs and can stop you from burning fat.
Scientists at the University of Texas found that runners displayed significantly lower levels of fat metabolism when they had a pre-training snack.
    5. Resistance training
Scientists in Tokyo discovered that the most efficient technique for weight loss is to exercise with weights before going for a run.
In their study, when participants took part in a resistance training session before running, they lost more weight during their run than those who did no preparatory exercise.
As well as prepping your body for improved fat loss, working out with weights before cardio helps to strengthen your cardiovascular system.

Lee From America's Fall From Wellness: What Happens When Wellness Goes Too Far

“Because of that story, I stopped drinking and I still don’t drink. It did kick-start a lot of positive things, but it made me really obsessive about weight loss and the food I was eating,” Danielle said. “I also think that, when I was sharing things about [weight loss on social media], I was like, I can’t backslide. I felt like it was a test, that I was being held accountable. It created this undue pressure.”
In the quest for wellness, Danielle held herself to what she called unrealistic standards because they were set forth as the ideal. But adhering to extreme diets or other measures to change your body may not always be healthy.

Wellness is about finding ways to mitigate stress and anxiety.
“There are a lot of supplements and fad diets being promoted as healthy, so I think if you’re in a particularly vulnerable state, it could be that you’re not able to see how dangerous it is,” Mysko said. “The trend we’re hearing about in the field is that more and more people are citing health and wellness as the driver rather than, ‘I want to lose this particular amount of weight.’ Instead it’s, ‘I just want to be healthy.’ When that is validated in the larger culture, it becomes even more insidious and tricky to treat.”
Ultimately, Danielle changed how she approaches food, weight, and social media. Now, she said she avoids talking about her eating habits, and her Instagram is filled with snaps of her in workout gear with captions about how she’s working to be more accepting of herself in all ways.
Still, Danielle does subscribe to other aspects of wellness in hopes of easing the chaos of her life.
“I have crystals at my desk, I am into all of it. I have a diffuser that releases essential oils in my office right now,” Danielle said. “I think wellness is really really important. For me, I think living in New York City undoes a lot of what is most natural for our bodies. Wellness is about finding ways to mitigate stress and anxiety.”
Aspects of wellness are rooted in science, and can help reduce stress and keep you healthy. Research has shown that meditation can lower blood pressure, relieve anxiety and depression, ease insomnia, and more. Diffusing certain essential oils, studies have suggested, might also positively impact anxiety and depression, improve sleep, and improve quality of life. Additionally, some practices that we deem wellness today—like yoga and Ayurveda—are cornerstones of Eastern cultures that have been used effectively for centuries.
The difference between these ancient and scientifically backed practices is that many wellness trends today are branded a “quick fix,” promising to help you unlock a higher level of being.
    But that doesn’t exist.
“[Wellness can be] dangerous in the broader culture as well because it promotes this message of a quick fix,” Mysko said. “If you eat this way not only will you be healthier but your life will be better.”
It's not to say that engaging in wellness practices are bad. If there are things that genuinely make you feel good about yourself and your life, there's no reason not to do them. And, of course, self-care is important and necessary. But Mysko said it's when we buy into the idea that there's one thing that will make us better, or that if we just keep doing more we'll totally transform, that we become vulnerable.
“Health is a holistic concept. It’s not just physical health, it’s mental health, emotional health. It’s not just, ‘I can eat this type of food, or do this diet, or take this supplement and be healthy,’” she continued. “There are many other factors that go into what makes a person healthy. That is not translated in the images we see.”

'Being obese saved my life': Mother's scans before weight loss surgery showed she had huge cancerous tumour on her ovary

  • Emma France was 22 stone and a size 26 when she decided to have surgery
  • 45-year-old decided to fly to Czech Republic for gastric wrap operation
  • But a routine ultrasound before surgery revealed a 17cm tumour
  • A mother-of-three has credited being obese with saving her life - after routine scans before weight loss surgery revealed a massive cancerous tumour on her left ovary.
Emma France, 45, was 22 stone and a size 26 when she decided to book the bariatric surgery.
She said: 'I’ll always be thankful that I decided to have the operation. If I hadn't, my ovarian cancer would never have been discovered and I wouldn’t be here today.'
Obese: At a size 26 and weighing 22 stone, Emma France decided to undergo weight loss surgery in the Czech Republic

Lucky: But a routine ultrasound before her weight loss surgery revealed a 17cm cancerous tumour on her left ovary
After struggling to control her weight gain for years, Ms France, an accountant from Woking, Surrey, decided to have surgery to lose weight once and for all.
She said: 'I’d always been a big girl. Over the years I’d tried every diet under the sun and would lose weight only to put it all back on again.
'I was stuck in a vicious cycle I just couldn’t break.
'I knew if I had any chance of losing weight I’d have to have surgery. I realised I wouldn’t be eligible to have surgery on the NHS but I couldn’t afford to get it done privately in the UK.
'Luckily I discovered a British company which sends patients abroad for surgery, which was a much cheaper option.'
After seeking advice from her private consultant, Ms France decided to have a gastric wrap, which transforms the stomach into a narrow tube, restricting the amount of food patients can eat.
Shock: Ms France (before her operation) said: 'The consultant told me he had discovered a mass near my ovaries, and I had to go back to the UK and see my GP straight away'

In November 2011 she flew to the Czech Republic to have her surgery, having used all of her £5,500 savings to fund the operation.
She said: 'I had mixed emotions, I was nervous but determined and excited, too.
'In the back of my mind I did wonder if the whole thing was too good to be true. I had phoned the clinic a few times and found it hard to get through, so I was wary, but I went anyway.'
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF OVARIAN CANCER?
The symptoms of ovarian cancer can be difficult to recognise, especially in the early stages of the disease.
This is because the symptoms are often very similar to those of less serious conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome.
The most common symptoms are an increase in abdominal size and persistent bloating, persistent pelvic or abdominal pain, and difficulty eating.
Other symptoms include back pain, frequent urination, loss of appetite, nausea, unexplained weight gain, changes to bowel habits and pain during sex.
Some patients also experience abnormal vaginal bleeding.
Before seeing the consultant, Ms France had a series of pre-operation checks, including a routine ultrasound.
She said: 'The consultant told me he had discovered a mass near my ovaries, and I had to go back to the UK and see my GP straight away.
'I was in a state of confusion. I was dozy from the drugs and found it hard to understand exactly what the surgeon was saying because of the language barrier.'
On her arrival back in England, Ms France was referred to a gynecologicalcancer specialist and underwent an ultrasound, MRI and CT scan.
She said: 'The oncologist told me I had a tumour on my left ovary. I was in shock but tried not to fear the worst.
'I just didn’t understand how I could have cancer when I had no symptoms at all. I didn’t feel ill.'
On December 15th 2011, she underwent a two-hour operation during which a 17cm cancerous tumour was removed, and she had a hysterectomy.
Ms France, who has children aged 21, 20 and 14, said: 'Luckily the cancer hadn’t spread. I was told I didn’t need to have chemotherapy, just regular checkups for five years.
'I thanked my lucky stars the cancer had been discovered early. I told friends that my tummy had saved my life.'
After recovering from an infection, Ms France decided that she still wanted to go ahead with the weight loss surgery.
On April 24th 2012 she flew back to the Czech Republic for the procedure.
Relief: After successful surgery to remove the tumour, Ms France later underwent gastric bypass surgery and has since lost 7 stone

She said: 'The operation went to plan. I had to have liquids for two weeks before introducing tiny portions of mushy food into my diet.'
Ms France also changed her diet drastically. Having habitually snacked on crisps, chocolate and cakes, she swapped to porridge for breakfast, soup for lunch and meat and vegetables for dinner.
By January 2013 she had lost seven stone. Today she weighs 15st 7lb and can fit into size 16 clothes.
She said: 'I've felt better than I have in years. I have more energy and I’m able to wear the kind of clothes I’d always dreamed of. I feel like a different person.
'I used to dress in black and try and cover myself up, but now I have a wardrobe full of coloured, fitted dresses, which I wear with pride.
'I’m so grateful my cancer was caught early. I now intend to live life to the full.'

Everything You Need to Know About Weight Loss Pills

A healthy diet, more exercise, more sleep, and better stress management are often the keys to weight loss. But what if you’re doing all that and not seeing a difference? Unfortunately, there’s no magical weight loss pill that will help you keep pounds off forever, but there may be one out there to give your body the jumpstart it needs.
    Prescription Medications
“After appropriate nutrition and physical activity, drug therapy to promote weight loss in patients who are overweight or obese can often improve a patient’s metabolic health—as proven by controlled, randomized, clinical trials,” says Harold Bays, M.D., F.O.M.A., F.T.O.S., F.A.C.C., F.A.C.E., F.N.L.A., medical director and president of Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center and chief science officer for the Obesity Medical Association. “What is perhaps most exciting is the number of investigational anti-obesity agents in development.” The prescription medications mentioned below are all FDA-approved, but they can come with side effects and aren’t right for everyone so you’ll want to discuss your unique situation with a physician who specializes in weight loss to figure out the best weight loss plan for you.
LiraglutideThis drug is actually an injection, not a pill. However, patients using liraglutide (Saxenda) may lose 5-10% of their bodyweight. It’s also available in a lower dose (Victoza) to treat type 2 diabetes.
LorcaserinLorcaserin (Belviq) acts on the serotonin receptors in your brain to trick you into feeling fuller than you normally would after eating smaller servings. The medication can help patients lose 5-10% of their bodyweight.
Naltrexone-bupropionA mix of these two drugs (available as Contrave) may curb hunger and help you feel full. Traditionally, naltrexone is used to treat drug addictions and bupropion is used for depression and smoking cessation. Patients taking a naltrexone-bupropion prescription may shed 5-10% of their bodyweight.
OrlistatAvailable in a higher dose as a prescription (Xenical) as well as over-the-counter in a lower dose (Alli), orlistat is a lipase inhibitor that helps reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs from food. Some people lose about 5% of their bodyweight while taking orlistat.
PhenterminePhentermine is a stimulant that helps suppress your appetite and could lead to a drop of about 5% of your bodyweight. However, it’s only approved for short-term use (up to 12 weeks). Phentermine is also part of a combination drug called Qsymia that contains topiramate (which is used to treat migraines and seizures). That formulation can help some patients lose 5-10% of their bodyweight.
    Supplements
Most supplements that tout weight-loss benefits don’t have enough robust research on humans to support their claims. The FDA also considers supplements (which can be formulations of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, or amino acids, or ingredients derived from herbs or botanicals) more like foods than drugs so there’s no regulation. That means it’s up to individual manufacturers to make sure their products live up to the claims on their labels.
If you’re interested in taking a supplement to boost your weight loss efforts, make sure you talk to your doctor first, especially because some can interact with medications you may already be taking. Below, we’ve compiled a list of popular ones.
CaffeineWe all love coffee because of the way it energizes us. The same way coffee stimulates our central nervous system, caffeine as a supplement can also kick our fat oxidation process into gear. Studies are mixed, but it may have a small effect on bodyweight and help prevent weight gain in the long run. You’ll just want to be on the lookout for nervousness, vomiting, and a rapid heart rate.
ChitosanDerived from the exoskeletons of crustaceans and arthropods, chitosan is a starch that binds fat in the digestive tract. Some small, poor-quality clinical trials show minimal effect on bodyweight, and side effects can include indigestion, bloating, and constipation.
Conjugated linoleic acidSome clinical trials show that conjugated linoleic acid may work on a number of bodily processes including lipolysis, lipogenesis, and apoptosis to cause small reductions in bodyweight and body fat, but results are mixed. Unfortunately, it can cause quite a few digestive issues and throw off your glucose homeostasis.
ForskolinExtracted from a plant in the mint family, forskolin is said to reduce a person’s appetite. The problem is that it hasn’t been studied very much on humans so it’s hard to say if it actually works. Side effects may also include indigestion, hypotension, blurred vision, pale skin, and fatigue.
Garcinia CambogiaThis is an extract from a tropical fruit that contains hydroxycitric acid. While some research has found it might promote small amounts of weight loss in the short term, side effects can include nausea as well as liver toxicity in rare cases.
GlucomannanGlucomannan is an ingredient extracted from the roots of the elephant yam. Older studies suggest that taking glucomannan with meals may help keep you fuller longer to help you lose weight. However, more recent research shows that it doesn’t really help with weight loss. Not only that, it can leave you with bloating, gas, and soft stools.
Green coffee bean extractThis extract may work by preventing the accumulation of fat and regulating the metabolism of glucose. Some research points to small amounts of weight loss, but few high-quality clinical trials have been completed. Headaches and urinary tract infections have been reported as side effects.
Green tea extractThere’s not enough research to say green tea definitely helps you lose weight, but some studies say it may help by boosting calorie burn and fat oxidation and lowering fat absorption. The bad news is it there’s the potential for unpleasant side effects like constipation, nausea, high blood pressure, and liver damage.
Hoodia gordoniiThis succulent from Africa is said to reduce appetite, but there’s very little published research on humans and it can trigger higher blood pressure and a faster pulse.
Irvingia gabonensisIrvingia gabonensis comes from the seed of an African mango tree. It’s purported to interfere with adipogenesis and help reduce leptin, a hormone associated with obesity, but few clinical trials have been done. It can also cause gas, headache, and sleep disturbances.
Raspberry ketonesAs you probably suspect, raspberry ketones come from raspberries. Some studies point to various raspberry components as helpful weight-loss aids, but there is very limited research specific to how raspberry ketones work on the human body, and some of it is funded by the National Processed Raspberry Council. While there’s potential for success, a lot is unknown.
    Substances to Avoid
Steer clear of any supplements containing these ingredients, which can pose serious health risks:
  • bitter orange (synephrine)
  • ephedra (ma huang)
  • 1,3-dimethylamylamine (DMAA, geranium, or pelargonium graveolens extract)
  • 2,4- dinitrophenol (2,4 DNP or DNP), phenylpropanolamine (PPA)
  • sibutramine

Does Your Cat Need to Shed Some Pounds? Here's How to Help It Lose Weight

Making one of the first inspirational stories of the year, Zack the 30-pound, overweight cat was adopted into his forever home and will be enjoy a strict new diet. Zack weighed two times a healthy weight when he arrived at Michigan’s Humane Society.
Thankfully, he’s on the road to weight loss with his new owners, and you can learn more about his story in the video above. What exactly are Zack and his new owners up against in their new journey together?
What weight is considered obese for a cat?
Obese cats are at least 20% heavier than their optimal weights, per International Cat Care. Studies show that 59% of cats in the United States are overweight or obese. Owners spent hundreds of extra dollars each year when their feline companions are overweight, according to PetMd.
What are the health risks for the cat?
Overweight cats have a shorter life-expectancy due to various health conditions that can be triggered by obesity.
Cats that are overweight can be susceptible to numerous diseases and complications, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis and urinary tract disease. Excess weight can also put a strain on the cat’s lungs, making it hard for the animal to breath.
Obesity can trigger hepatic lipidosis, also known as “fatty liver disease,” which can leave felines in need of a feeding tube and IV fluids. If left untreated, it can be fatal.
An increased risk of cancer is the case for obese cats as well. Mental health can also be a struggle for the overweight animals because their instincts are to run when they’re in danger. An inability to do that, because of their weight, can cause them distress.
How can owners help their cat drop excess weight?
Just like humans, exercise and diet play a major role in helping a cat lose weight. Owners can take their animals on short walks or play games with them that help expend calories.
The next thing that’s recommended is for the cat to cut calories, but not too drastically, as that can also trigger hepatic lipidosis.
Vets recommend no longer leaving food out for your cat all day but feeding the cat three to four small meals a day. A meat-based diet, high in protein, is  recommended over dry kibble. Also, swap out the cat’s treats for healthier ones and make sure its water bowl is full to help satiate hunger. It’s recommended for a veterinarian to help decide what diet would be best for your pet.
Regular weigh-ins, every two to three weeks, for your cat can also help to keep yourself accountable as the owner, per the Veterinary Centers of America.
Once you get your cat to a healthy weight, then it’s all about maintenance. Owners are urged to continue to monitor their animal’s food intake and activity.
